stabilization measures for sports

At its meeting on May 13, 2020, the Federal Council fixed the areas benefiting from stabilization measures as well as the financial criteria provided for Swiss sport. For the football and ice hockey leagues, 350 million francs will be made available. Regarding popular and elite sport, the sum amounts to 150 million francs. From local associations to professional clubs and training courses, numerous figures in the Swiss sports world are threatened by the paralysis of the sale of tickets and subscriptions, by the cancellation of sporting events, large and small, or even by withdrawal of sponsors. The experience from past financial and economic crises has shown that sport is generally more affected than the economy, and more sustainable. This observation is based on the financing mechanisms specific to the world of sport and on the heavy dependence on sponsors, income generated by events, the media, television rights, lotteries, and funds from public authorities. The most affected are the flagship areas of the sport economy, namely sports facilities and events, clubs and associations and sports tourism. The Federal Council fixed the areas benefiting from stabilization measures as well as the financial criteria for a set of measures with the aim of preserving the important place occupied by sport in society and the economy, and protecting Swiss sports structures.
